 Day 1 CPT (Curricular Practical Training) in the USA refers to programs that allow international students on F-1 visas to start working immediately upon beginning their academic program, rather than waiting for a full academic year. It is often used as a workaround for maintaining work authorization, especially by those transitioning from H-1B or other visa statuses.


How Day 1 CPT Works

  1. Offered by Certain Universities – Not all schools offer Day 1 CPT. Only specific universities (mostly private ones) allow students to engage in work-related training from the first day of their program.

  2. Tied to Academic Curriculum – The work must be an integral part of the degree program (e.g., MBA, MS programs with built-in internships).

  3. Part-Time vs. Full-Time CPT

    • Part-Time CPT (20 hours or less per week) does not affect future Optional Practical Training (OPT) eligibility.

    • Full-Time CPT (more than 20 hours per week) for more than 12 months makes a student ineligible for OPT.

  4. Employer Authorization Required – A job offer or internship in a field related to the degree program is usually needed to qualify for Day 1 CPT.
