Can I use TurboTax or H&R Block to file my taxes as a nonresident?

❌ No, you cannot use TurboTax or H&R Block (the standard versions) to file your taxes if you are a nonresident alien for tax purposes.

Here's why:

  • These platforms only support Form 1040, which is for U.S. residents.

  • As an F-1 student within your first 5 years in the U.S., you are typically a nonresident alien.

  • Nonresidents must file Form 1040-NR, which TurboTax and H&R Block do not support in their regular online versions.

✅ What You Should Use Instead:

Software Supports Form 1040-NR? Notes
Sprintax ✅ Yes Designed for international students and scholars
Glacier Tax Prep ✅ Yes Often provided free by universities
TaxAct (Nonresident version) ✅ Yes Limited, less user-friendly than Sprintax
TurboTax ❌ No Not suitable for nonresidents
H&R Block (standard) ❌ No Also only for residents

🛂 How to Know If You're a Nonresident:

If you are:

  • On an F-1, J-1, M-1 visa

  • In the U.S. for less than 5 calendar years

  • And do not pass the Substantial Presence Test

➡️ Then you are a nonresident alien and must use Form 1040-NR.

Need help verifying your status?

Just tell me:

  • Your visa type

  • How long you've been in the U.S.

  • If you've used CPT or OPT

And I can confirm which form you need.
